The
rite of memorial and past's renewal must be considered an arrival poit
and not a departure's one. Fabrizio Bosso and Rossano Sportiello met because
of sharing this postulate. They asked themselves: who is the greates?
Louis Armstrong, no doubt. Neither Miles Davis had any. And off they go
voicing their deep need to tell about Armstrong. The project is developed
on two levels. On one side the two musicians outline Armstrong with his
own words by reproposing his repertoire in style, measuring themselves
in a philology that's the result of a deep knowledge, and never of a mere
imitation. On the other hand Bosso's trumpet and Sportiello's piano launch
themselves in a fascinating rereading of the New Orleans's trumpeteer.
A journey to the heart of Armostrong's music, marked by a highly imaginative
syntax language, creative solutions and a vivid narrative rhythmicity.
Rossano
Sportiello approached music because in love with Neapolitanian and especially
Renato Carosone's music since he was a child. About this singer Sportiello
affirms: "He was the first to initiate, since the 50s, the formula
that draws the big Parthenopean traditional melodies up to the overseas
rhythmical and harmonic stylistic elements". Perfectly connected
to both the aestethic of stride piano masters such as J. P. Johnson, Fats
Waller and Willie “The Lion” Smith and to the second generation
of stride piano and in particoular to Rulph Sutton's figure, Sportiello
feels such a great esteem for traditional jazz that he is willing to travel
the world to play it. He has recorded many albums , among which "Piano
On My Mind. Solo Piano" for Jazz Conneisseur, and has been a stable
member the Milano Jazz Gang. Recently, he has started playing in clubs
and festival around Europe with the Blue Napoli, performing with Gerry
Gennarelli, Guiorgio Rosciglione e Gegè Munari.
