Inimitable
style, first-rate quality, dynamism, vigorous execution and high-speed
rhythm, associated with refined combinations and a large range of sonorities
and possible resources.
All this and much more is what Fabrizio and Flavio have in common. First
of all, their native city, Turin. Secondly, their talent for transforming
elusive looks into sounds. They celebrate together on stage. And, as in
every self-respecting celebration, a culture is represented and a tradition
is carried on: the exaltation of miths and rites. In this way the two
artists pay tribute to as many trumpet players of the history of jazz,
Freddie Hubberd and Lee Morgan. Two king's trumpets, which have been for
both the artists source of inspiration for their individual artistic progress.
And this is the myth. As for the rite, it emerges when the quintet - whose
rhythmicity is enriched by Mannutza at the piano, Bulgarelli at the double
bass and Tucci at the drums - concentrates on the original sections of
the repertory, composed by both of them: atmospheres that are sophisticated
and sensitive, never over-conceptual, lyrical but controlled. Flavio and
Fabrizio have known each other for a long time; Fabrizio was a child,
and still remembers:"I had a real flash when, as a child, I heard
him playing for the first time. My father, an amateur trumpeter, used
to study with him, in Turin, and one day, I was already devoted to trumpet,
I went to his musical show, and I told myself: I want to play like Boltro!"
Today, they're at the same level. They embrace in a complicited dualism
which rapidly turns into a hard fight. In both cases they make their trumpets
blare. The king's trumpets.
Flavio Boltro was born in Turin in 1961 and graduated from his city's
conservatory. He was spotlighted in the italian scene by the mid '80s
- also performing with Maurizio Gianmarco's Lingomania - before starting
collaborations with remarkable musicians such as Steve Grossman, Cedar
Walton, Bob Berg, Don Cherry, Billy Hart e Billy Higgins. From 1990 he
has taken part in many festivals and tours with Freddie Hubbard and Jimmy
Cobb, and afterwards he started collaborations with Laurent Cugny, between
1994 and 1994, and Aldo Romano and working more often in France.
Formerly trumpeter in Michel Petrucciani's sextet, Boltro's a very active
part of Stefano di Battista's quintet (later on known as Battista/Boltro's
quintet). He has cut several records as a leader, some of which with Blue
Note label. Among these is to be remembered the high quality “Road
Runner”.
Luca Mannutza was born in Cagliari in 1968. He has being playing piano
since he was a child and graduated from the G. P. da Palestrina at the
age of eighteen. By that period he started approaching progressive rock,
discovering Weathering Report, and in the early 90s he started a collaboration
with the Argentinian saxophonist Hector Costita. At the same time he came
in touch with Andy Gravish first and, later on, with the italian musical
scene marked by Paolo Fresu and Paolo Gianmarco. By June 2002 he won the
Massimo Urbani Prize and can be traced in quartet with Max Ionata, with
whom he also presents a valid duo on Joe Henderson's compositions.
Luca Bulgarelli is one of the current greatest young double bass players;
he also plays the electric bass and is interested in digital instruments.
Gifted with high technical mastery, deep and rich expressive sensibility,
coming from Abruzzo but living in Rome, he is proving to be an encyclopedic
musician who is building himself an important role in other many important
projects such as Roberto Gatto's duo, Sergio Cammariere's band, in partnership
with Ada Montellanico ed Enrico Pieranunzi. He is the leader of a spectacular
quartet with Bosso himself at the drums, Gianluca Putrella at the trombone
and the eclectic Mr. Fabietto at the electronic instruments.
Lorenzo Tucci is an unbelivable drummer whose technique is the result
of a scrupulous scomposition both of afro-american drumming, which goes
from Elvin Jones to Tony Williams, and of Shally Manne and Buddy Rich's
impressionism. He often performes together with Rosario Giuliani, he is
a High Five's member and is part of the group of musicians recruited by
Nicola Conta to his crossover projects. 2001 is the year of his first
album, "Sweet Revelation" (Philology).
